If I have a virtualized server that is running ten instances of the operating system and the hardware goes down, after the hardware is fixed do I reboot the hardware once and that automatically reboots those ten instances of the operating system or do I need to reboot each of the ten instances of the operating systems? Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Most Virtualization platforms will have a way to configure the virtual machines to automatically power on the virtual machines so that once the physical machine is back online the virtual machines are automatically powered up, in the correct order (if an order is needed). It would be helpful if you posted what virtualization platform you are using.

depends on how the virtual instances are configured too. If you have them set to power off when the host goes they will start up and if hardware isa the same they won't have issues. If they are configured to go to a save state you may need to reboot them

But even if I have them set to power off when the host goes and they are autamatically restated when the host is restrated they still will still go through the restart procudure, it just does not require any extenal action to start their restart. If the host that is restatred was running ten instances of operating systems those ten instance will each still pass through the reboot process and ten reboots will occur. Jim4522

Correct, when the host is restarted the guest machines will go through their normal boot process.
