System Center leverages agents deployed to an Operating System (whether a physical server or virtual guest) to gather information about that environment and related assets (both virtual and physical). Service Manager will also have a full asset management solution provided by our partner Provance, which is expected to become available in the coming months (a beta is currently available for download from their site, <a href=”http://www.provance.com”>provance.com</a>).

    System Center Service Manager is definitely a powerful tool for gathering configuration information about IT Assets. Cased Dimensions is another software vendor who has written software to work within Microsoft's Service Manager. Cased Dimensions focus has been to ensure automation in the population of asset, user and location information - it is all synchronised in an automated way. Cased Dimensions has also focused on "Finance" with a procurement function within their Asset Management application, allowing the approval and linking of asset information to Asset Management at the beginning of the assets life-cycle.
