How do emails work? For example, let's assume that you are sending an email from your ISP account to my email address at GFI. What route does the email take from your machine to reach me? Which are the protocols involved?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The email goes out from my ISP, and routes through whatever paths handle the traffic flow on the internet. Generally speaking, it will pass through a number of different paths (try running a tracert command to get an idea of how this works) then find your email location. The protocols may vary, depending on what type of email is involved. Are you sure this isn’t your homework questions?

Emails are sent via MTA s.  A MTA or mail server is required that transmits the mail. Mail user agent a human user interface for reading and sending mail.
Different protocols are used in the process of mail transfer. SMTP is simple mail transfer protocol and this is used in most of the mail transfers. When the email is sent it reaches the mail server of the sender that is the sender’s mail server from the mail user agent. This is done using the SMTP.

Now the mail reaches the receiver’s mail server. Now the receiver’s mail server requires ensuring delivery to the receiver mail user agent by using the protocols such as: POP3 or IMAP.
