If your hardware is compatible of installing Vista as RAM:1GB atleast, Minimum requirement of Processor is Pentium4 series and a drive fully blank for installing a new OS. if you have all these then it is very easy to install Vista on your CD, just insert a bootable Vista disc on your DVD drive then normally go to BIOS setup select first boot media as DVD drive, then save the settings and exit by pressing F10 and enter, now your system will be rebooted and will automatically go to the installation wizard, now you follow the steps of normal installation in an empty drive left for installing the new OS, now when your system will boot after installing the OS you will get an option of selecting your OS as per your choice.

Windows Vista does have much higher system requirements than Windows XP. First make sure the laptop is compatible to upgrade to Vista or the laptop will crawl.

After you’ve determined that your laptop is fast enough for Vista, buy a Vista license key or CD. You might find better deals on Ebay.

Once you have the Vista CD, pop it in the drive and boot up your laptop. Depending on the make and model of the laptop the buttons can be different. Press F12 at the BIOS loading screen to select your boot drive. Select to boot from CD. If prompted to press any key to continue installation do so. The resulting Windows Vista Installation wizard will step you through the installation.

Hi JennyMack,

What I have is an old laptop that was gave to me with windows XP, and my PC is windows vista.
I want to know how I can take off windows XP from the laptop and put my vista program on to the laptop.
I need to delete XP and install the Vista program on it. IF it can be done, I need instructions on how, that way I can use the same program on both computers, it will just make me more portable, rather than buying a new laptop.

Hi Brucehat,

Could you please be more specific with your question? What is the program you are trying to install?

If you have a copy of Vista, would you be able to install both on the same machine? You can create a partition on your hard drive using third-party software and then install Vista on that partition. You would then choose which OS to boot on startup, and you could install Vista-specific programs onto the proper platform.
