I used to be able to email this person who I suspect is pretending to be someone else, but now all those emails are being returned Mailer Daemon.
How do I find out where the emails first came from (or can I)?

Generally, a mail server requires smtp-auth server authentication, this includes some status codes and every code has with a standard status message. Email system shows message according the codes. You can see show full details button/ option to see details, if any.
