This question was submitted on SearchExchange.com

I have created rules in my firewall to block outgoing port 25 traffic from any computer except the email server. How can I test this at each workstation to see if port 25 traffic is actually being blocked? The firewall logs will show me blocked traffic but I don't know how to generate port 25 traffic from the workstation? The goal is to stop any Zombies that might get loaded from working. Thanks

Simply open a command prompt window on the machines and type telnet ip.address.or.name 25 You can enter any external SMTP server address or name that is listening on port 25 to see if port 25 outbound is blocked.
