How can I tell if there’s a keylogger installed on my computer?

Q:
How can I tell if there's a keylogger installed on my computer?
A WhatIs.com member wants to know:

Is there any "test" one can do to see if a Keylogger program has been accidentally downloaded as a result of installing a new program?

How can you find out if a Keylogger program is on your system?

There is no single way to test if there is a key logger software installed as each is setup differently to avoid detection. Many virus scanners will pick up a lot of the malicious key loggers that are out there but may not necessarily pick up all.

-----------------------------------------

Keyloggers will try to connect to the internet to send the acquired data, so if you can install some kind of firewall having the ability to monitor outgoing internet connections, you should note when a strange program ask for permission to establish and outgoing connection.

Zone Alarm watches both incoming AND outgoing files, but it it not the only one. The important thing is to recognize when, as stated above "when a strange program ask for permission to establish and outgoing connection." You could use a sniffer program such as Wire shark when the firewall indicates that something is trying to get out. Using a sniffer is not for the faint of heart, but it will get you the information that is being sent out.
Good Luck!
