I also want to demote the domain controller from windows 2000. Because I am using Windows 2003 as Domain Controller and windows 2000 as secondary domain controller. Now I have to migrate the Servers to Server 2008. So I have to raise the domain functional level before I do Migration. To Raise the Domain Functional Level from Windows 2003 I need to seize the windows 2000 Domain controller. But if the migration is not successful, I want to use back the Secondary Domain Controller. So is it possible to stop the Domain Controller Service in Windows 2000 and Enable back if the migration has some problem. thats why I am thinking it is necessary to demote the Domain Controller from Windows 2000

Demote a domain controller means that the server will stop being a domain controller. It will become a member server.

You might want to share with us what exactly you need to do or what functionalities you want to disable, and/or what conflicts are these DCs having.

question Carlosdl.... doesn't that wizard delete the entire Domain controller? And if so is there a method to only disable the controler while still keeping it in the list?
