i am getting a degree in network security/telecommunications currently. is school going to teach me everything i know to do a job or it's just going to give the skills to get it done but how do actually get experience in doing it which is what an employer wants. internships are hard to get as they require experience too so what do i need certs to get in now to learn network admin/ engineering which will help me learn security later on. is network security same as information security?

A friend says that school teaches you how to learn. Getting a degree means you are smart enough to learn how things are done, but real work experience will give you more insight into what you are working on. Don’t get me wrong, a degree is VERY important in your career, people will pay you more and show you more respect.

For starters try college work study jobs, they have to be flexible for your school schedule.

In no way will a degree be enough...They're an essential part of success but by all means won't prepare you for everything you need to know to be a well-rounded IT professional. It's going to require continuous learning and a lot of initiative on your part. Check out what I've written and recorded about degrees vs. certs. vs. experience here, here, and here. Network security is technically a subset of information security that focuses on the network itself. Best of luck!!
