I have 6 yrs of experience and I am CCNP certified. I’ve worked on Cisco and Microsoft products. Now I am working as a performance analysis engineer and I want to pursue systems, network, and application performance analysis. I work on tools like NetScout, TeamQuest, SiteScope, Opnet, and Quest. Please suggest a career growth plan to sharpen my skills and suggest certifications for gaining expertise in this field.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

For somebody with your background and your interests, there are two ways to go:

1. pursue advanced training from your application vendors (NetScout, TeamQuest, and so forth)
2. go back to school and get a Master’s (if you lack one) or a PhD (if you already have a Master’s) in performance monitoring and analysis.

The academic route will take longer, cost more, and involve more work but ultimately opens the most doors for career development. If you’re lucky enough to live in the DC Metro area, be aware that George Mason University has one of the best programs in perfman/perfmon in the country, thanks to the presence of perfmon/perfman luminary Daniel A. Menasce on the faculty. Other good schools for perfman/perfmon include Purdue and Carnegie-Mellon (a current literature search on the subject will also help you identify other schools, if none of these is conveniently placed).

HTH, and thanks for posting,
