I have a B.A., and I’ve been MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer) certified since 2000. I was working as an office clerk, but I am passionate about network administration and would like to gain some experience in this field. I am now 44 years old. What is the best way to become a network administrator?
CCNA is a must, but you should really look to get at least CCNP. You should also consider CompTIA certifications. Network+ and Security+ are crucial as well.

If you live outside the United States, by submitting your email address you consent to having your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
Experience, experience, experience….even if it means you work for free for a non-profit or other volunteer gig. Setup you own systems on a home network as well…Check out the things I’ve written on IT careers as well. Best of luck!
Again I find myself following in the footsteps of the redoubtable Mr. Beaver who’s already dispensed excellent advice (and if you tire of his great advice, you can also check out my IT Career Blog as well). In addition to volunteering opportunities, you might let your IT department know that if they’re planning any kind of network upgrade or installation, you’d be glad to pitch in and help out. I’d also urge you to start upgrading your MCSE to the equivalent MCITP on Windows Server 2008 administration, as this will also take you in the networking direction you already wish to go.
And again, good luck to you in your continuing career enhancement and development efforts.
