These are the different versions of the evolution of the code.  Over the years there have been improvements to the commands and operation codes to simplify the coding process.  Over the years the L1, L2.. indicators became obsolete.. New commands have been added as well as API’s and built in functions ( BIF’s) that did things like sub-string, scan, trim to name a few. Then with the ability to run embedded SQL we have RPG Free to allow free form coding.  Gone are the days of having to code in specific columns ans use a format like most other languages This make integration much easier..

RPG III, RPG IV, RPG ILE, and RPG Free Format

RPG III runs on all current systems . it has a separate compiler.

In RPG III line layout is slightly different than later versions.

RPG IV, RPG ILE, and RPG Free Format are all the same thing and use the same compiler.  RPG IV is an Integrated Language Environment Language.  Code in RPG IV can be written in a fixed column based format or a more modern looking Free format.  Fixed and free format code can exist in the same source member.

RPG IV is the version of RPG that came after RPG III. It refers to the grammar and syntax of the language. RPG IV is the fourth version of the language specification.

ILE RPG refers to the use of RPG IV to participate in the Integrated Language Environment. You must use RPG IV if you want to take advantage of ILE features in your programming. If there is ever a need for a new language version named "RPG V", it will also be part of "ILE RPG".

RPG Free Form is RPG IV, but it removes the column-based restrictions for source statements. It seems possible that any future "RPG V" would be an extension of the "RPG Free Form" structure, perhaps without including any column-based structures at all.
