Hibernation delay on XP Pro Laptop
XP Pro on Acer Laptop. If I just close the lid it hibernates quickly, but if I go via theStart menu it frequently hangs at 'preparing to Hibernate' for up to 30 minutes and may never do so. If it does, then often get BSOD on resume.

Are you sure closing the lid forces hibernate? Most laptops by default go into stand by mode when the lid is closed. This is usually configurable in "Power Options" in Control Panel. I'd make sure it is hibernating before troubleshooting further...

On laptops, there are usually power settings in the CMOS menu also.
