Q:
Help with installing VPN on Vista
When trying to install VPN on a machine with Vista, the download gets to the point of "installing the deterministics network enhancer" and then stops. A message pops up saying "a lock is holding the application" please close all open applications that are open and try to reload again. Then it starts a rolling back and unistalling what software did install. I tried 5 different times to install the VPN software but was not successful. Can you give me any tips to try to get this software installed?

A few suggestions on how to remove all traces of the Deterministic Network Enhancer (DNE)...

Use the MS Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Go to Control Panel\Network and Sharing Center "Manage Network Connections"
-> properties of your network adapter
If you see "Deterministic Network... " then click on it and "uninstall"

Look for and delete from registry the relevant keys (e.g. "DNE" or Cisco):-
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

There may be uninstall information under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Then try to re-install :-

- Reboot after any of above changes
- Right click on the install file, Properties, ensure "unblock" is clicked
- As mentioned, install as "administrator" (right click "run as administrator")

Also, the DNE has been mentioned in Vista Application Compatibility Update
Latest = http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=954366
(superceded mentions DNE... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935280 )

Hope this helps some.

Vista attempts to protect its user’s more, by preventing certain things from happening. Sometimes, it alerts you, sometimes it does not. It’s just a method of making sure you know exactly what’s on your system so it doesn’t get crapped up and bogged down too quickly.

I know this is a few months down the line, but can I just say I think you people at IT Exchange are Gods!!! I have been struggling for 2 days to install my VPN and kept running into the same problem with the deterministic network enhancer blocking the installation. Thank you! Thank you! My joy is complete!
