Cathy wrote in with this question recently: "I'm new to the AS/400 and need help getting started. I have worked as an operator and know some of the basics, but now I have been put in charge of adding users, compiling, and a few other tasks. My first problem is creating a new user. I have mirrored another user?s profile, but the new user can't do anything." What else does Cathy need to do? Can you help her out? -- Debra Tart, associate editor, Search400.com

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Could you expand upon the statement about the new user not being able to do anything, please? Can the new user get signed on? Is he or she getting CPF error messages?

All things being equal, when you copy an existing user the new user should behave the same. You should determine what the initial program (INLPGM) parameter in the user profile is and what it's supposed to do. Most likely it's an application or menu that has its own security (e.g. what menu options is a user allowed to access). If that's the case, then you'd need to set up the new user in the application. That's how things work at my company. We have to create a user profile, then add them to the application and tell the app what options they're allowed to access.

If you created the user profile and signed on with that user, you should have either received a message on the screen or will have a joblog for the new user. Look at the joblog and that should tell you the problem. If there is no joblog, then it could be as Jaicee suggested in that the application logs the user right back off. Not a very user friendly app if it does that without sending some message. Need more details on what happened.
