I have a Windows 2000 server virtual machine running in VMware, which is running low on free space on its C: drive. Do you know of a way to increase the size of this C: drive system volume? I can easily increase the size of the space available to the virtual machine from within the VMware environment but this change does not reflect automatically within the hosted Win 2000 server operating system. Extending the disk size this way would save hours of work reinstalling a fresh server.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

This is an older (2004) discussion about how to do just what youa re asking. Try it out and if it works (or if it does NOT…) PLEASE leave a comment in the discuss section.
Good Luck!

Using VMware Converter is the easiest way to to this, it allows you to re-size drives as part of the process. Just install Converter on the VM and run through the wizard which will allow you to increase or decrease the size of the drives. Check out my two articles on this for more detail... Using VMware Converter to resize virtual disk files Increasing virtual disk partition size using DISKPART or GpartEd

Try booting a gparted Linux live CD. You should be able to freely tweak your partitions from there (and expand them to fill your actual vm allowed size). You can even boot it off a USB drive.

diskpart.exe is just for data volume, and contiguous space is required, it is not working for increasing c drive, if you do not want to start over to rebuild the server, partition magic software would be a godsend and give you a simple way, see guide to increase server c drive easily. Hope it is helpful.
