HBA not showing WWN

A SearchStorage.com reader asks:

WE have a data center server, 2003 servers and two HBAs in each node. Both the cards are Emulex Fibre Channel Cards. One card is already in working condition. We have recently added the second HBA card. The driver was updated, and I am able to detect two HBAs from the Emulex configuration tool, but only one HBA is showing the WWN. Why?

Are any changes required at the Fibre switch? We created a zone at the switch and added the second card using WWPN in the SNS table. But we're still not able to see the devices from host that we can see from the other working HBA card.

When using more than one HBA in your server, you need a filter driver to support path failover and load balancing

Call your storage array vendor and ask them to supply you with their path management software. (IE: Secure path, Power Path, HDLM, MPIO, etc...)

You should see the WWN of the HBA from the switch port it is connected to. Always troubleshoot from the switch out.

Which Emulex HBA model, and are the volumes you are trying to present the same as on the first card? Often secondary paths (ie through the second HBA) are masked by either the operating system or the HBA to prevent overwriting existing volumes. Also, what kind of Fibre Channel switch, and what is the complete zoning setup (ie single zone with all initiators and storage, individual zones for all HBAs, etc., port WWN zoning or node WWN or port zoning?)

We’ve had a similar problem and the solution was the driver configurator both times and the level installed to support the configuration.
Do you have any failover software installed?
This can cause issues relating to the primary card and secondary card and initialising the other card.
You mentioned you zoned the switch, I’m not sure how you did this without the WWN.
Try removing the primary card and see if you can detect the secondary card.
Have you tested for hardware failure in the fibre or the GBIC’s?
