yes we are doing online backup if this mean doing backup to disk. and yes we are still dooing backup to tape.
The expert Like W. Curtis Preston does not recommand to take every thing out of taps. like alle the backup that have to go of site.
he best situation is to backup avery thing to disk and using a montly full to tape for out of the office storage

Last August, when I purchased a new network system setup for my business, we switched to online/off site backup. We basically have three lines of defense – the company I went through has our backup tower here, then where they are, they have us backed up at their location that creates a new backup every so many minutes, and they partner with a group who stores a third backup somewhere else in the country. In a way, it’s excessive, but…if we ever needed it….

However, I still find myself making a disc backup of certain items, and the backup method we have does not backup anything only saved to your desktop – so you have to monitor your use.

I have used X-drive storage in the past for personal files too, and frankly I thought that was a pain – upload time was ridiculous, and y nerves about someone hacking their system didn’t help.

Good luck in your search for better backup!

We use both online and tape for most critical data but for everything else we just use online.

I was tasked by my boss to evaluate Iron Mountain's TEMS solution. The most difficult part of the evaluation is finding a company that uses the email archiving piece, and asking them a few of our questions. I know Iron Mountain can provide us with some references, but we wanted to find our own first. But yeah, our information store is getting too big, and we need to archive anyways, so having someone else do it also saves in soft costs, which frees up administrators to do other things.

None of my clients are using online backup that I know of. I like the idea but I think people have trouble giving up that control...and justifying the bandwidth usage...and not having a tangible tape in hand when needed.

Some of our customers said they tried several online storage services like Carbonite and LiveDrive. The stick with something Handy Backup Remote saying it was the most cost-effective option for the amount of space they required.

We solely use online backup now. We had a trial period for a year where we were testing both MyOtherDrive and ElephantDrive and ended up using MyOtherDrive for the long haul. Elephant Drive was quite a bit slower when uploading our data. Its amazing how using the online backup has taken our workload and expense of tape swapping down.
