hardware/software configuration for web site hosting

Web site design & management
Thanks to all for replying to my previous question. This question is of general nature. I'm planning on creating(hosting) a web site, at which the main contents will be questionnaires, polling and compiling the ratings. I know I will need the database behind the HTML front-end. I will design and develop the database and the front-end myself. My difficulty lies in not knowing how to go about the hardware / software components that I might need. All I have is 2 PCs (one Windows XP and one Windows 2000), and a cable connection to the internet. I imagine I need an internet domain name -- I saw companies that will offer hosting, but how will I add my own Oracle application to that? I prefer to do whatever necessary and administer and maintain the web site myself. My preference for the database is Oracle, but I could use Access at a pinch, if Oracle/Web solution would appear too expensive. Thank you for any pointers you could give. Paulina.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

First, get a domain hosting site. I use www.1and1.com. They have PHP and MySQL included with the monthly charge. If you want to use Oracle, please be prepared to pay big bucks. Not only that, I don’t know of any that would host Oracle, but I don’t know them all.

If you decide to host on your personal PCs, be prepared to pay a lot more for a business connection from your cable or DSL provider.

If this is just for fun, you are still better off getting the PHP/Apache/MySQL package from www.php.net. It will have a bundled executable that sets up the applications on your server. It will install and get you up and running for development in less than 1 hour.

My opinion only, not necessarily that of the management.

Good luck,
