You can install either the 32bit or 64bit of the developers edition.

If you are just installing the client tools don't bother install the 64bit edition as the client tools are only 32bit.
You can install any software of 32 bit on 64 bit but you cannot insall any software which is 64 bit on 32 bit
This is how every upgraded system can run its previous versions
but pervious version cannot run unpragded system . http://www.techyv.com/questions/can-i-install-sql-server-2005-32-bit-64-bit-vista

I haven't tried SQL 2000 on Windows Vista, but I'm betting it isn't supported. You probably will need to fire up a Windows XP VM to install SQL 2000 on.

You can try setting the installer to run in Windows XP mode and see if that'll let it run. You are trying to install a 9 year old piece of software onto an OS which is just a couple of years old. I'm not surprised there are compatibility issues.

I have tried to install sql server 2000 on Windows Vista business 64 bit, but I get a message that says: "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see wheather you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"!!.

I have already installed it on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with no problem at all.

How can I install it on my Vista 64-bit machine?
