 Hard Drive replacement procedure

I have a Dell Latitude D 620 Laptop. I would like to upgrade the internal Hard Drive. What is the procedure to copy the entire HD to an external HD, swap out the internal drive, and then completely restore all of the SW ?

You wouldn't be able to restore all of the software by a copy and paste. Products like Acronis and Symantec/Norton Ghost would suffice for the job.
