Any applications to protect data on hard drives?

I am wondering if there are any applications available in the market which would allow me to protect my hard drive data.
Are there any tools which would prevent a hard drive from being accessible if it was removed from a computer and plugged into another computer or a portable hard drive case? I realize that BIOS and user passwords are mandatory however there have been cases where hard drives have been stolen from the machines and the data extracted.
Any help with this would be truly appreciated.

There are a few available, my favorit to use is TrueCrypt.

You can create encrypted volumes or do the entire disk.

I highly recommend PGP. A few clients of mine have implement it and it works nicely. My clients are in the financial and pharmaceutical industries.

It is still possible to protect your important data from your hard disk drive, either external or the primary hard drive. However, it is always in the computer system side where the data security software is installed and executed. The best way to protect your data even if it would be stolen and run from another computer unit is to encrypt the entire drive using the Windows Encryption built in any windows Operating Systems.

I think you want to protect the data on the hard drive, rather than the hard drive itself. And, as explained by legacyboy, you can encrypt files, or the entire hard drive, as well as using a password to get at the data.
