I was just told that Database Performance Management Software apps are always stand-alone applications.

That doesn't seem right to me. Are DPMS tools always stand-alone?

by "database perf mgmt software" are you referring to database monitors? If so, then YES they are stand-alone in the sense that they do not need anything else in order to execute and also NO in the sense that they need information from the database (via journaling or SMF or something) in order to communicate that information to you.

if "db perf mgmt sw" means something else, then plese ignore my response.
