Just use a secure website.
SSL will provide authentication and encryption for traffic.
*Using certificates prevents access from random sites.

Or if you are using MS Office, setup the server with ‘SharePoint Services’ version 2 with the service pack is secure, convenient, and Excel / Access views can be set to automatically update when the SQL tables change.
And it is free, but best performance comes with Office 2003.
