Hi... We are a Cdn Govt agency involved in Satellite Operations with a commercial partner based across the country. We will need to build/buy a small web service application for reporting purposes that will require minimal IT experise to build or maintain. The back end RDBMS engine is built with MS SQL server and will be maintained by the partner. The size of the database is expected to grow over a period of 7 years to ~10 GB. The partner has chosen to use MS-Access and Crystal Reports 7 for report generation and is quite satisfied with these, as they provide required report generation capabilities with no restrictions regarding access to the data. We would need to develop a similar reporting capability but with restricted view of the entire data (i.e. record and column level security must be available). The partner does not object to our setting up a web server on their premises to access the SQL server. There are a few options: 1) Install MS-Access on IIS Web server with access to SQL server. 2)

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

In response to 1, wouldn’t you rather use ASP to interrogate the SQL database, instead of Access? Are the other options confidential?

Two choices - you said they already use 'Crystal Reports' which supports WEB page output. Just use a secure website. SSL will provide authentication and encryption for traffic. *Using certificates prevents access from random sites. Or if you are using MS Office, setup the server with 'SharePoint Services' version 2 with the service pack is secure, convenient, and Excel / Access views can be set to automatically update when the SQL tables change. And it is free, but best performance comes with Office 2003.
