Can you suggest a free tool available so as to test performance of the system when multiple applications irrespective of desktop/Web application are invoked from the same Web application running on the system?

Dan Cornell, a member of SearchSoftwareQuality.com's expert panel, suggests JMeter from the Apache Jakarta project. It is a Java-based tool that allows for Web (HTTP) server testing and in addition can be used to test applications over other protocols such as JDBC, FTP and LDAP.
