I am using COMPAQ CQ40-317TU laptop.

How can I format C: drive using bootable Win XP cd?

If you are going to be re-installing Windows, as part of the install process it will ask you if you want to do a full format or a quick format. A full format will wipe the drive clean and you’ll be ready for a clean install.

    and also dont forget to change the boot sequence to cdrom / dvdrom drive 1st....but this step its actually optional..

    I don't think he's going to be able to boot from the CD without the boot sequence change.

    John gave you the easiest answer if this is for the purpose of installing WindowsXP. If you are looking to remove the information on a disk for security reasons, you need something stronger. There are a fair number of options including disk manufacturer utilities, or something like dBan. These will wipe the disk. You would then need to redefine partitions and format to use the disk.

    I use a Windows XP pro OS on a thumb stick and have wanted to just format the drive in preparation for deployment as a second drive, or to install Linux etc. If, for whatever reason, you just want to format the drive you should try opening my computer, right click on the HD, and select format. Follow the prompts and it's done.
