I'm runnig Windows 2000 server on a machine and the last user never left a password. No one in the company knows the password and re-installing the OS is not an option. I tried using the the suggestions on MCSE world, but have been unable to crack the password. Can anyone help me find a way to get into the system without knowing the password?

Logging on to a Problem Machine
Here are some steps you can take when a Windows 2000 machine won’t
let the user log on and you don’t know the administrator’s password.

Major lifesaver - do a google search for a "Linux Boot Disk" This takes the form of a floppy (or image), or CD-ROM, but you can boot the computer with it and reset the admin password (and other things). Bobk

Haven't tried this one, but was saving it for reference when this type of problem came up: If you are locked out of a system and do not have the administrator password to log on, here is a hack to get you in: Install a second instance of NT on the system. This can just be a plain install. Boot into this new install, go to the original install system32 folder, rename logon.scr, then copy cmd.exe to logon.scr. Reboot to the original install, and wait 15 minutes. A command console will pop up, type explorer.exe, and you will have the desktop. You can then add another admin user account, or reset the admin password,as you want. When done, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, and logon using the account you created, or the admin you adjusted. Don't forget to rename logon.scr back to its original.

Google Knoppix. With Knoppix you can download a Debian utility chntpw.deb that will reset administrator password on Windows computers. Knoppix is a bootable CD and runs in memory.
