Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I expect the number needs to be unique, but several questions come to mind:
Does it need to be sequential?
How is it used?
Would 32 character UNID be too cumbersome?
What versions of Notes Client & Server are involved?
Is this a web application?
Can the number be assigned later by the server in the background?
Are there replicas of the database?

All these will have an effect on if & how this is accomplished.

When an user create a new document What versions of Notes Client & Server are involved? All in version 7 Is this a web application? No Can the number be assigned later by the server in the background? Yes, It doesn't need to be created when the user open a new form. Are there replicas of the database? The easiest way to do this would be to have an agent update each new document with the sequential number. Have the agent run on only one server so that there's no chance of the other servers interfering. Keep track of the last number used in a separate document (could be a profile document), and update as each new document is assigned a number.
