    It's a good question, Pinches. I'd say that since technology gives us the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere at any time (as long as they, too, have access), the world has come to seem much smaller and "flatter".

    You might also want to look at Thomas Friedman's book The World is Flat for more insight about this question. There are a lot of compelling arguments for information technology creating a flatter world, allowing us to can communicate instantly across any distance and access information previously available only to small professional and academic circles.
