Files lock down on Windows Server
I want to give restricted access to files located on a Win2003 SP1 file server. Restricting on the content is feasible (RMS - rights management), I would like also to avoird the users to have a local copy of the file on their workstation or any other location, also if RMS will not allow the user to open the file. Does anyone know a way (NTFS rights, third party application or ...) how to allow a user to open a file with the associated application (Excel, Word, ...) but do not allow to create a local copy (copy command on OS level). The 'save as' menu will already be blocked by the RMS settings. Thank you for your help!

Answer Wiki:
If you set a Read Permission that means he/she can copy a file too,if you would like to restrict for opening don't give a Read & Execute Permission too.

Thank you for your reply, but it didn’t solve my problem, because may be I didn’t explained it correctly.

If I take a real life example, I would like to allow people to read books (files) in the library (share), but I do not want to allow them to take it home (copy on their local drive) or anywhere else (outside of the library).

Thank all of you for your help!

1) Citrix or MS TS hosting of the app to view the files. Lauch restricted apps or desktops that allow the users to only execute word/excel with RMS and don’t allow them to connect to that server/share from computers other than the citrix/MS TS.

2) Use a webserver app to access the folder or share with a service account and let it open up the app in a browser for the user. Again, with RMS you should be able to prevent them from copying it (I never tried RMS though).
