I have a file the is sent to me as .DAT but the company that sent file and machine I need file to go on need it to be .FAT.

Normally a .DAT file is a text file containing data. A FAT is more common a File Allocation Table. This contains a file structure. There are a few obscure applications that do use a .FAT  file extension. You best bet is to contact the sender of the file and let them know your needs in detail.

    .DAT file is either a text file or a binary file, while fat stands for file allocation table which is mainly a file system that is supported almost all OS today. You can try to open the .DAT file in any text editor or sometime it can be opened in media player like Windows media player Or VLC. Ask the sender for correct information.
