I have a date field in my display file. When I enter an invalid date, it gets highlighted automatically. I want to show the user that the entered date is invalid through a message in the display file. How to do it?

You would have to change it to not be a date field. Then do the editing yourself to bypass the automatic edit. Creates more work for you and invites a chance for and error.

A major purpose of using a date data type is that system functions automatically handle errors. If you don't want the system to do it, then change the definition to a simple character field. Do all of the validity checking and formatting in code that you write. Of course, as CharlieBrowne says, you'll write a lot more code and potentially have more bugs, but you'll have full control. -- Tom
