External Hard Drive Repair
I took apart a LaCie 2TB external hard drive because one of the drives was bad; it was clicking when I turned the hard drive encasement on.

It has 4 500 GB hard drives set to RAID 0, and two hard drive controller cards so the hard drives are set in pairs as 1 master and 1 slave.

I don't have a spare 500GB hard drive to replace the bad one with, and the external hard drive will not work without all 4 drives.

I didn't have much time to mess with it, so I'm wondering anyone knows of a way to get it to use one hard drive controller card because I know that pair of hard drives works or if adding a different capacity hard drive will work. I appreciate any suggestions.

If you have a 2 TB consisting of 4 500GB drives in a RAID 0 and one fails, then you have lost your data. There is no fault tolerance in RAID 0. You could use a company like OnTrack

I was not looking to restore the files. I was looking to get the external hard drive working again….

No matter, I’ve replaced it.

it not only is possible but a great way to save money. most people are more concerned with the data but if that’s not the issue then buying one internal drive is always better than another 2TB drive! - frank
