External hard drive storage

I have 30 GB of storage on my laptop. If I was to buy an external hard drive that contained 2 TB of storage and I needed to access it and use it, would I need 2 TB of storage on my laptop to be able to access the external hard drive with 2 TB of storage on it?

No. I have a 4TB external drive. I have my 1TB laptop my wifes 500g laptop and 2 500g dDesktops all backed up to this one drive. The sizes don’t have to be the same in order to use them. The only thing is if the external drive is smaller. Example it you had a 1TB laptop with a 500g external drive you can only back up half the lap top.
