i have an external hard drive which has been reconnected after removal of a programme which was downloaded. however since reconnecting the hard drive when i double click on the icon on My Computer, a box appears asking "do you want to format your disk drive? and then Yes or No". There are documents on the hard drive so I don't know why its asking me to format the drive when its been used before now, on my pc. Help!

Software/Hardware used:
windows xp

What program did you remove? If it was anything that managed the boot sector, encryption, or other drive-level stuff then reformatting may be necessary.

@ OP: What OS are you running? If you need to, attach the HDD to a Linux-based system and mount the drive, most often it will allow you to see the files on the drive...

If the drive has multiple interface options, you might also try using a different one. For instance, if you have been using USB but it also has FireWire or eSATA, try using the alternate interface.
