How can I open an EXE disk?

Daughter purchased a game that has EXE on the bottom of the package. Do we have to purchase a program in order to open EXE discs. We cannot load the game on our Windows XP programmed computer??

    if you already put in the disc into the cdrom / dvdrom and click on the exe it should run automatically.

    That seems a little odd. If it is placed in CD / DVD drive, and autorun is turned on, it should then ask you if you want to install it. The next question is, if the CD / DVD is placed in the drive, does it ask you what you want to do with it? Is the drive reading it correctly? Another possibility is that the drive is not capable of reading the disc. This happens when disc is a DVD and the drive is only a CD Rom.
