The culprit was, indeed, the legacyExchangeDN entry that persisted in the Active Directory out-of-sight data that was revealed by ADSIEdit.

When you say “Outlook continues to bring up the old user account name” I’m not sure if you are referring to how the name appears in the From field when the person with the changed name is sending messages, or if you mean the way the name fills in when someone starts to type the person’s name into the To field. The NK2 file is the cache of names used to autofill when typing in a name instead of selecting the name off the Global Address List. Deleting that file starts the cache over. We had a user who had problems with the way her name appeared in the From field after her last name was changed. I’m copying and pasting here from the procedure we used to solve it. Hope this helps.
To Correct Problems in Outlook after User?s Name is Changed:
1. Edit the user profile (make sure they are out of the Outlook during this process)
A. Either right-click on the Outlook icon on the desktop, or go to Control Panel and click on the Mail icon.
B. Select E-Mail Accounts.
C. Click Next to View or Change existing accounts.
D. With Microsoft Exchange highlighted, click the Change button.
E. Edit the User Name to the correct last name and click the ‘Check Name’ button.
F. Click Next.
G. Change “Mailbox Name” to the user’s new name.
H. Click Finish.
