I am currently running a windows 2000 server with Exchange 2000 SP3. My machine continues to relay messages at night and I am having problems stopping it. I have applied all the current exchange patches and have unchecked the, Allow all computers which sucessfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above, box and only selected the list below with my domain. I have disabled anonymous SMTP Connections and filtered unsoilcited email messages KB313395. What elso should I try to do? I run Trend Micro Scanmail services as well and It is only helping somewhat. Any suggestions on a better spam filter?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

In Exchange 2003 there is a list on the SMTP connector which lists “Name space” or domains.
On my server I removed the * and incerted the domains the server controls.

Never set up 2000, but maybe it works the same way.
There is also sites where you can test your server as an open relay:

It appears after further digging that I am subject to a reverse NDR attack on my system. Apparently spammers have figured out how to spam using the Non Delivery Report system. I found that all messages in my mail queue were from postmaster@name of my domain.com. The only documented fix is to upgrade to exchange 2003 and use recipient filtering who are not in the directory or use a product like GFI Mailessentials for Exchange/SMTP12.
