Exchange 2003 forward email problem

I have auto forwarding on Exchange 2003. i.e. joe@mywork.com forwards to joe@hotmail.com. This was set up using a contact in active directory,then setting up the user exchange settings. I have four people set up like this and it works most of the time. Except every now and again, if a email is sent from a client with a pdf attachment to another internal person, the mailbox gets the message, then the forward mail is not delivered. The client gets a notification of none delivery, althoguh it got to the exchange mailbox. Now the forwarding kicks in and continually sends to the forwarding email a message which has [WARNING: A/V UNSCANNABLE]subject title. This gets sent every couple of minutes for about 3 days. Has anyone experienced this before? It happens on all users with forwarding, and appears to only happen on emails with pdf attachments. Thanks, Denis

In our environment we had pdf attachments locked down as well. They could be delivered to us, but noone inside the organization could send. This was set up by our network security team who just happened to hear me complaining one day and said “Oh we did that!” So it may not have anything to do with your Exchange. Could be filtering at the firewall. Check with whoever takes care of network security in your organization. This is why we do not allow auto-forwarding either. These looped messages can take down our mail servers in an hour and it has happened to us several times before we disallowed this practice.

    Thanks, an update, the pdf attachment and the email is changed to a winmail.dat file. Tchnochic, what have used used to replace the exchange forwarding to users external accounts?

    We have not replaced it. It's simply not allowed. These rules cause email loops that take down our mail system so we do not allow it period.
