My company is planning an upgrade of our nt4 PDC's and BDC's to server 2003 standard. We have three different sites and currently our main site has a PDC and the remote sites of BDC's. We are planning to implament 3 new 2003 servers. One here and one at each of our remote sites. The one question I have is that will a nt4 server running exchange 5.5 work with in a 2003 AD domain. Each of our sites has a exchange server (This may be changing to just our main site having one running exchange 2003 which makes this question pointless but that might be a while.) The exchange server will be left on the nt4 boxes but one of them is a BDC right now. First, will exchange 5.5 work in this fashion and second can we demote the nt4BDC to a NT4 standalone? I have seen a tool called Upromote (?), Does this work? Thanks so much.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

YES, all exchange versions will run in an AD 2003 environment. Exchange 5.5 has an ADC specifically for an Exchange 5.5/ AD 2003 environment.
The best way would be to setup the new ADC (from SP1 to avoid problems). Then if there’s a need, install a new Exchange 2003 server. Then move users from 5.5 to 2003.

I have heard of Upromote, but I have no experience with it, so I cannot tell. Personally, I’d rather install a fresh copy of NT4.

NT4.0 with Exchange 5.5 will work in a 2K3 AD environment. The BDC with NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. You cannot "demote" the BDC with reinstalling. To get rid of the BDC component in a 2K3 AD Domain, I would "upgrade" NT 4.0 to 2003 Server with Exchange 5.5 untouched. The previous BDC would then be a 2K3 Member Server with the replication component. Good Luck. Roni

Hello, Exchange 5.5 will not work properly on a Windows Server 2003 box but will still work on W2k. You could upgrade your server to W2k, but if your going to do that then you'd be better off to upgrade to W2K3 server and Exchange 2003. Exchange 2003 will play nice with other 5.5 servers should you decide to keep them, or you could do away with all 5.5 servers and move everything to the Ex2003 box. With SP-2 for Exchange 2003 out, even the standard version of Ex2003 will support something like 75Gb information stores. Plus upgrading to 2003 will give you much more bang for your buck in an AD domain than 5.5 will. Good luck!
