Do you by chance use a corporate archiving solution like Quest Archive Manager or Symantec Evault?

OK, that kills that possibility. We do use a corporate archiving solution and once the mail is "stripped" by the archiving server then it appears like an unread message again in the mailbox. But that does not apply to your situation obviously. I don't have any other ideas on this one at the moment. Hope you find a solution!
