I have an exchange 2003 service pack 2 on a windows server 2003. My problem is with the Background Cleanup. Best practice analyizer says that background cleanup isnt running. I checked the registry and dthe correct registry values are set. There are some mailboxes where the size increases even though the messages are moved to personal folders. My best guess is that the background cleanup isnt actually running. Is there a way to reinstall the background cleanup? Also there are serveral private-
values in the registry and there is only one Mailbox store. Is it possible that there isnt a registry value for my private mailbox store? Anyway to find out what the GUID is so this can be checked to make sure it exists in the registry. Thanks for any help

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Timeless, the cleanup is done during the maintenance insterval on the mail store. Right-click the mail store, go to properties, click the database tab and check your maintenance interval time. That will tell you when it is running. Your mailstore has to exist in the registry or it would not mount. In some cases you might find more than one “Private-Mailbox Store GUID” and “Public-Public Store GUID” values in the registry. These values can be determined by looking at the objectGUID attribute of each store. In order to view this value you should use a tool like LDP.exe or ADSIEDIT.msc (both can be found in the Windows Server 2003 Reskit Tools. This page gives the details of what to look for, even though it addresses a different issue.
