In Excel 2010, when I have a worksheet open and want to close it, often the sheet will not close unless I save changes. Sometimes it allows me to close without saving, and sometimes it does not.

Due to installation issue sometime this problem will occur may be try re-installing or check for the updates and install. This might help you with this problem.

As Office 2010 has so many advanced facilities, might be some of the process still running after saving/ closing. However, you can try this if it worth, open excel 2010 and click office button > click excel options > click resources at the bottom of the menu on the left. Now click diagnose button to the right of run Microsoft Office diagnostics. If it asks that diagnostics were recently run, click the run diagnostics again. If it shows any message like "why you should run diagnostics appears", click continue button.

None of that appears in Excel 2010. There is no Office Button and the Excel Options button doesn't have anything marked Resources and their is nothing related to running diagnostics.

Run office repair tool (built-in utility of MS Office) and check if that helps.

If you changed ANYTHING like page formatting, font or something to make your viewing easier, it's considered a change. When you try and exit, it's going to ask if you want to save the changes even though the content may not have changed.

The problem is when it asks you if you want to save it gives you two choices: Save and Cancel. It will not accept Cancel and stays locked in the loop. Task manager cancels it for me but it didn't use to do that. I reinstalled office and it didn't resolve anything.

What OS are you using Win7, Win8 or Win10? I have seen some strange thing happen with Win10.

Have you updated MS Office recently? If yes, and possible, please uninstall the updates and do check again for the same. Here is a good help from Office, please link here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/213428/how-to-suppress-save-changes-prompt-when-you-close-a-workbook-in-excel

I am using Win 10 Pro on Surface Pro 3. Windows updates are automatically installed and I usually check at least once per day to see if it is up to date. Will check status of 2010 Office updates to see if they are included in the automatic update.

I was pretty sure Office updates are included in windows updates and they are. So will go through the update history to see if there are any recent updates that might be causing the issue.

I use the spreadsheet function if I want to do some special calculations but don't need to save them. Sometimes, but not all of the time when I hit the Close button on the top right of the window I get the save file/cancel window that shows up when you hit the save button. Other times I get the save/don't save/cancel window.

This is a strange problem, I just ran across it myself.
I have it happening with just one of my spreadsheets so far, open it, then click the 'x' to close the worksheet and I get prompted to save the changes. There are none..

Must be a glitch in the form itself so....
I opened the document with the repair option and saved it.

Open the newly saved document, close it right away and still asks me to save changes...

    Somethings off

You can try an alternative software instead of using Office 2010 (just of checking purpose) and try to save/create new document. Also is that happened in Word also?
