Excel that increments number when created from template?
Hi all, Need to create an excel template that everytime it's opened, it increment a number in the excel spreadsheet. The idea is everytime a file is create from the template, it gets a unique number. Also do you think it possible to use this unique number as the name of the file to be save. For example, first file from template would be called 101.xls, second file from template would be called 102.xls. Not sure if I should use some kind of script to do the latter part? thanks in advance Paul

Software/Hardware used:
Excel

Answer Wiki:
Hello Paul, some time ago I produced a form for an alternative health consultant and made the form give a unique number which could be used as a file name that would be able to be sorted numerically. The basis was to have a cell where today's date was placed as well as cells for the first and last name. From the date, which in General format would give you say 11 March as 40248, PLUS I also extracted up to the first 6 characters of the Surname and their first initial. This requires some concatenation and also some simple IF formulas to deny a file name until all the data was entered correctly. For instance, if your name is say Paul Template and today's date is 11 Mar 2010 the resultant name generated would be 40248TemplaP I hope that this is heading in the direction you're after, for further information I may be contacted at l.p52@hotmail.com The shortcut for today's date is Ctrl + : (colon) cheers Larry.
