Hello Paul, some time ago I produced a form for an alternative health consultant and made the form give a unique number which could be used as a file name that would be able to be sorted numerically.
The basis was to have a cell where today’s date was placed as well as cells for the first and last name. From the date, which in General format would give you say 11 March as 40248, PLUS I also extracted up to the first 6 characters of the Surname and their first initial.
This requires some concatenation and also some simple IF formulas to deny a file name until all the data was entered correctly. For instance, if your name is say Paul Template and today’s date is 11 Mar 2010 the resultant name generated would be 40248TemplaP
I hope that this is heading in the direction you’re after, for further information I may be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org
The shortcut for today’s date is Ctrl + : (colon) cheers Larry.
