Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The most common use is whe you are calling an RPG program in your CL.
Lets say you have a file defined in the “F” specs call FILEIN
In you CL you really want to process a file called FILEINTWO
Then before the call to the RPG program you would use this command.
OVRDBF FILE(FILEIN) TOFILE(FILEINTWO)

My most common use is to override from the file that I compiled over to the file that I'm going to use. I use a lot of "model files" that are supplied by IBM for features such as command *outfiles. I declare and compile over the model in QSYS, and at run-time I override to the actual file that was created at that time. The file is almost always one built in QTEMP. Model files can also be used in applications. One use might be to provide a generic file description for CPYSPLF. You can use CRTDUPOBJ to duplicate a file description and copy into the duplicate. The OVRDBF will redirect I/O to connect to the actual file at run-time. The model file is used at compile-time. The model file description should only take up a few K-bytes. Tom
