Errors w/ .NET Service Pack 1.1 installation
I am having trouble installing .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1. Each time I attempt the install, I get the following 2 errors. Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows Update Agent Event Category: Installation Event ID: 20 Date: 8/31/2005 Time: 6:00:33 AM User: N/A Computer: SERVER003 Description: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903). Event Type: Error Event Source: .NET Runtime Event Category: None Event ID: 0 Date: 8/31/2005 Time: 6:00:27 AM User: N/A Computer: SERVER003 Description: The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: .NET Runtime version 1.1.4322.2032- SL2603.tmp - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services: Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x14dc (5340), Thread id=0xfc4 (4036). So far I have tried to unstall .NET (which is also not successful) so that I can reinstall both .NET and the SP1. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Answer Wiki:
Hi Michael, This is a very critical error that has not quite been researched (as well as resolved) by Microsoft. At this point it has been acknowledged by many to be unsolvable. If you do a Google search on your errors, you will find that many people are perplexed with this one. Most likely if you call Microsoft support, they will tell you to reinstall your operating system. Hopefully you have your data backed up. If, however, you get any help, please post the resolution as best as you can back here as this will undoubtedly help many out there researching this same problem. I know this doesn't help you with your problem though. Harlin Seritt Internet Villa: www.seritt.org

Suggest doing a repair install using w2k3sp1 slipsreamed disk.. you may also want to try the following first:
1. Start Windows Explorer, and then open the following folder: C:WINDOWSsystem32CatRoot2
2. Right-click the Edb.log file, and then click Rename. Rename the file “Edb.old.”
3. Start Internet Explorer, and then open the Windows Update Web site to continue the updates.
If you still cannot install the updates, rename the CatRoot2 folder. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Start Windows Explorer, and then open the following folder: C:WINDOWSsystem32
2. Right-click the CatRoot2 folder, and then click Rename. Rename the CatRoot2 folder “CatRoot2old”.
3. Start Internet Explorer, and then open the Windows Update Web site to continue the updates.
