Error message from SQL Server 2000 Agent after antivirus installation

SQL Server 2000 Agent would not start after the installation of the antivirus software Sophos and a reboot. I found the messaging service was shut off, so I started it, rebooted and the agent came up running. I then tried to start a backup job, but I received “error 14258,” which stated that it was unable to proceed because the agent was starting. I then went into Event Viewer and restarted the agent. Finally, I went to the SQL Server log file, which listed an “informational message – 15457.” This apparently means that the configuration was opened, and this appears to be true. Will this cause the job not to function as it should?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Check the status of the service from Administrative Tools –
is the service Running or Starting?
Alerts and operators can be edited without Agent running.

Also check your Agent.out file.

See if you see:

“… ? [393] Waiting for SQL Server to recover databases…”

If you tried stopping and then restarting just the Agent
service and it won’t start, reporting the same error then my
guess would be that you are running SQL Server in
lightweight pooling mode. Set it back to the default of
thread mode.

sp_configure ‘allow updates’, 1
go
reconfigure with override
go
sp_configure ‘lightweight pooling’, 0
go
reconfigure with override
go

Thanks KarlG
You have stated the exact symptoms, except that the sql server log file states we are in the thread processing mode so I do not see a reason to do a sp_configure as you stated.
