I can't install or uninstall a lot of software (most notorius java runtime) because of that message, I've been searching for solutions over the past few months and nothing solved this problem. Now I'm trying to reinstall steam and that error pops up, it doesn't mention appdata or anything, only :. (semicolon, dot)

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I researched this issue, and kept ending up with this same solution whether I was on a Microsoft site or another tech forum.

Click on “Start-Run, type “regedit” (without the quotes) Navigate to this registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER –> Software –> Microsoft –> Windows –> Current Version –> Explorer –> User Shell Folders
Clear the key: Recent (right mouse click on the key/folder, choose “Delete”) Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Would love to hear if this cures your error message and allows you to complete your installation/uninstallation.

My scanner would not work and also Itunes. I found after a lot of looking that my registry keys were changed by some programe go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Current Version --> Explorer --> User Shell Folders and check the settings for My Music, My Pictures and My Video mine all had a zero in them I changed all of them to for example MY pics My Pictures REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%My DocumentsMy Pictures I changed all of the files to this and rebooted and it fixed my problem. You can download a prog from microsoft which will fix my pics file it is Microsoft Fixit 50356.msi hope this helps a few people.
