Q:
Entrepreneur looking for a free network monitoring software program for a startup
A good friend of mine in NYC needs a free or cheap network monitoring software that he can use to watch over the network of his new business. Does anybody have suggestions? If so, have you used it before, or are you recommending the product via word of mouth? Thanks.

Software/Hardware used:
Windows XP

ipsentry.com - cheap, runs on Windows, only one license needed to monitor any number of systems.

Word of mouth, I've heard time and again that SpiceWorks is a good starting point.

I have read a lot too about GroundWork open source. Nagios is one of the other recognized tools for network monitoring. There are tons of plugins and books about Nagios.

Something a little easier on the Windows side is a program called "The Dude". Rather like a simple free version of What'sUp Gold.

Thanks Michael. Have you used Spiceworks before, or are you strictly going by word of mouth?

I’ve known a few people who use Nagios and they like it.
